Interesting post. From the historical research I've done (not comprehensive, but convincing), Gamay was the grape originally grown in Burgundy. It predates Pinot Noir, which was actually a mutation of Pinot Gris---not the other way around, as most people seem to believe.
So to be historically accurate, both grapes were planted and grown in Burgundy in the 14th century, and were in competition until the Duke banned Gamay.
